Maid of Honor

emily jantz

Maid of Honor

erin rhodes

I first met Em Jay on Klassen 1st South our freshman year of college, where we would coordinate our nap schedule and knock in “Morse code” on our shared wall.  Since then we have traveled to 11 countries, eaten more than our fair share of chocolate chip pancakes, and had some of the most raw and authentic conversations of my life together.  There are very few memories of college and my life the past 6 years that don’t involve Emily.  Many countries and time spans have tried to separate us, but not even an attractive Spanish man could keep her from being my Maid of Honor in September (I hope).

Erin and I have school bus #229 to thank for our friendship.  She was the second friend I made when I moved to California in 2nd grade.  I probably could have asked her to be my future Maid of Honor on that first bus ride 17 years ago. She has been a constant in my life, through the scarring middle school years, attending college 1200 miles apart, until finally fulfilling our dream of living together in 2013.  Our friendship isn’t going anywhere and she is one of the girls I need next to me on my wedding day and always.

My cousin Carolyn was the closest thing I had to a sister growing up.  During sleepovers when we were younger Carolyn would crowd me out of the bed to make room for all of her beanie babies.  She once told me that if her beloved cat died on my watch that she didn’t “know what it would do to our relationship.”  So although I can never be sure where I lie in her list of priorities, we have always had an incredible amount of fun together.  I just really enjoy spending time with her, apart from any family obligation.  She is lovely and smart and a clear choice to stand next to me as one of my bridesmaids.

Danielle is the most thoughtful person you will ever meet.  She makes everyone feel like her best friend, and I have had the privilege of calling her mine for 12 years.  She is brave, generous, diligent, caring, and has the loudest laugh and the longest legs around.  Ask me to tell you the story of her falling off the trampoline at Aqua Camp ’03 and I might die laughing.

joanna foley

I had the privilege to stand next to Joanna as her Maid of Honor on August 4, 2013.  So clearly she owes me.  Somehow we have always had the same interests—scrapbooking, circus, swimming, water polo, skiing, you name it.  For 13 years our friendship has been a constant reminder of God’s grace and provision in our lives.

I am so proud of her (she is now a wife and a recently Registered Dietitian) and have been blessed to witness her growth both individually and in relationship to her husband, Kevin.

I actually knew Corey’s sister, Kamryn before I knew Corey.  Kamryn and I were in the same Girl Scout Troop in elementary school, led by her mom (my soon to be mother-in-law!).  We were also part of the same missions trip to Romania in high school, although Kamryn doesn’t remember me being there ;) She lives in Chicago now and is on her way to joining the Chicago Police Department.  She is one of the most passionate and determined people I have ever met.  I have always wanted a sister!

lindsay kounter

It is hard to write about Lindsay without using lots of capital letters and excessive punctuation.  She is the most enthusiastic and sassy girl I know.  She gives the best hugs, wears her heart on her sleeve, and I dare you to keep a smile off of her face when she laughs.  The best part of having her as a college roommate may have been her serenading us to sleep in the “megabed.”  Lindsay is everything you want in a bridesmaid, and I’m glad she is one of mine.

I got to know Makenzie during our junior year of college when she lived across the hall.  I was able to witness her relationship with her now husband, Aaron, unfold from the beginning.  Makenzie and Aaron are a stunning example of a relationship centered on Christ.  Makenzie has always been very intentional about keeping up with my relationship with Corey and has been transparent in sharing her wisdom on relationships and marriage.  She also has some impressive dance moves, so look out for her at our reception.

One of my favorite memories of Vanessa is sitting on top of a mountain in France while she rocks out to Avril Lavigne for all the world to hear.  And that was on one of the worst days of our Europe trip.  She is the life of the party, but is also able to make you feel like the most important person in the world to her.  Our friendship kind of happened on accident, when Emily and I randomly roomed with her our junior year of college.  It was clearly a divine conspiracy, and one that would eventually lead us around the world together.  Whether its reading bedtime stories in a “megabed” in a tiny Flex apartment or subsisting on peanut butter straight from the jar in Sweden, Vanessa is someone I know is always on my team.

Of all of my bridesmaids Sarah is the person I have known the shortest amount of time.  However, the depth of friendship that has grown between us over the past two years is remarkable and something that I am so grateful for.  She is one of the biggest blessings graduate school brought me, and don’t know that I would have made it through without her.  She continues to challenge me to be a better person and Child Life Specialist.  Our friendship has always been very natural and has brought with it a level of connection that is super rare.  She has been a bridesmaid in countless weddings, and I feel pretty special that she has made room in her schedule for yet another.
